Continue along the Strand and turn right onto Adam Street. The Adelphi, an Art Deco office block, will be on the right at the corner of John Adam Street. Its entrance has some fine bas-reliefs featuring workers at toil by N.A. Trent. This building replaced an elegant riverside apartment complex designed in the Palladian style by the brothers Robert and John Adam in 1772. (The name Adelphi is a pun on the Greek adelphoi, ‘brothers’.)

The Adams also gave their names to this cluster of quiet streets nestling between the Strand and the river. A number of their buildings still survive here, notably No. 8 John Adam Street – the headquarters for the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce – and Nos. 1–4 Robert Street, where Robert Adam lived for a time, as well as No. 7 Adam Street.
